You just put up the greatest toy a kitten could dream of, and now you want to keep him away from it? Well, you won't be there all the time to watch him, and I guarantee you, that kitten is going to be in that tree. Of course, you could try the spray thing and get all your ornaments and those electrical cords wet (fire!!!) and, maybe, by the time you take the tree down, the cat might stay away from it. By that time, he is going to identify you with something unpleasant...the source of the water...and he won't be liking you very much.
When you put the "toy" up again next year, he'll have forgotten this year, and you can start all over again. It's better to just secure the tree and make sure he can't tip it over.

Kittens and cats don't respond well to punishment. Spray bottles are okay, but what they will learn is that they should not do it when you are around.
However, they respond very well to positive reinforcement. Meaning, when the kitten wants to climb the tree, distract her and make her chase a toy mouse instead, or get a ball of string instead. She will just forget about the tree for a little while and play with something else. Then when she is in the room and NOT climbing the tree, being good, give her a treat or affection. Show her that you like it when she is not on the tree.
Cats will not learn that something is bad even if it means they get watter in the face. They will learn that something else is better. If nothing else is better, they will learn that you seeing them climb the tree equals water in the face and then they will begin to mistrust you.
I had a kitten that wanted to pee in my bed. I started giving her treats whenever she used the litter box and she stopped shortly after. (Of course I got her checked by the Vet first.)
Good Luck!

I had the same problem with my cats come Christmas time. There is no proven way to stop a cat from climbing the Christmas tree, as you'll find it is in every cats nature to be curious and climb things. You could try to get a scratching post, and if the cat gets on the Christmas tree pick him/her up and place them on the scratching post. However the most effective way is spraying the cat with water, it will soon learn not to go up the tree. declawing a cat is inhumane as its natural instinct to be curious.

The spray will work for training-however, to prevent the tree from being knocked over while you are training the cat-tie a string to the top of the tree and hang it from the ceiling. It really doesn't show and it will save you lot of frustration.

Lay down flat sheets of foil around the base of the tree. Cats hate alluminum foil. It stopped my mom's cat from chewing on her plants by just laying foil around the plants and in the general area of the plants. It sounds funny, but it really works and will keep them away when you're not looking as well.

You cant. For a little kitten that's like a big tower of fun. Just accept the fact that he will do it. Don't put anything on your tree that will break or hurt you kitty.

Along with the water bottle you can put in a little apple cider vinegar...they hate the smell of it.You can also use that to train a cat not to get on furniture.

Put a puppy under it! If that doesn't work tell the cat that it is Easter and if it doesn't get down it could be raised up!
