Both. He was taken down from the cross thereby descending and then ascended to heaven after he appeared to many.

God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whoever believes in him would have eternal life. John 3:16
When Christ died on the cross he had to die (descend into Hades). Death was conquered when on the third day the morning after Sh-abbot he rose again. Later He ascended in the heaven and was seated at the right hand of the Father and His kingdom will have no end.

He spent three days in Hades. At that time it was actually made up of two parts. One part was "paradise" and the other one was torment. Christ preached to those who had died before Christ's time on earth. These were the Partriarchs like Abraham and Moses, etc. The Bible says that HE(Christ) led captivity captive, which means that for all who would accept HIM as the SON of GOD, He took to Heaven. He also took the keys to death, hell and the grave before HE ascended. So first HE went down then He came back to the land of the living and appeared to over 500 ppl, then HE ascended to Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father.

Both. First He descended and "preached to the spirits in prison," then, (after rising from the dead and spending 40 days with His disciples), He ascended into heaven (I Peter 3:18-22).

He descended into hell and then arose to sit at the right hand of God.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

He was raised from the dead-- He resurrected through the power of the Holy Spirit of God.
Jesus disciples would not die violent deaths if they did not see Jesus back from the dead, not as a ghost, but in the flesh. His disciples saw with their own eyes His wounds from the nails used in His crucifixion. They once and for all believed that Jesus is the Son of God and is their Lord and Savior.
He appeared to other people and stayed with His disciples for 40 days-- cooking and eating with them. He even caught a whole bunch of fish for them.
He ASCENDED into heaven after the 40th day, telling His disciples to go to the ends of the earth and share His Gospel of SALVATION.

Jesus descended into Hell for 3 days to set the captives free.
Before Jesus died on the cross nobody could enter into Heaven(not even righteous people who lived and breathed God, like Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Isaac, Jacob, Abel, Samuel, etc.) They went to a place that was close to Hell, which the Bible refers to it as Abraham's Bosom. God set this place separate from Hell(which the Bible also mentions that a gulf separated Hell from Abraham's Bosom). Read the story about the rich man and Lazarus. Lazarus went to Abraham's Bosom and the rich man went to Hell, the rich man was calling over to Lazarus to help him because the rich man was in torment day and night.
In the book of Matthew, right after Jesus died on the cross, it says that the dead in Christ rose from the ground and appeared to many people.
I did some reach and read a lot of the books that were banned from the Bible. In these books I found that those people who were in Abraham's Bosom were set free and allowed to enter into Heaven, when Jesus died on the cross and went to Hell.
Jesus went to Hell, took the keys of death away from Satan, and set the captives free(the old testament saints). Which they resurrected as well with Jesus!! The Bible says that even the resurrected saints appeared to over 300 people!!! This was to verify that they resurrected and ascended into Heaven with Jesus(they stayed on earth for 40 days with Jesus)
Back to the banned and forbidden books of the Bible. In some of the books that go on to talk about Pilate even he witnessed the resurrection of the dead, which people mention saying that some of the resurrected spirits look like Abrabam, Moses, Isaac, and Jacob.
SO Jesus descended, then was resurrected from the dead, was on earth for 40 days and 40 nights, then ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God.

There is more than one apocryphal book of the Bible which mentions something called the "Harrowing of Hell", in which Jesus descended into Hell to take the previous prophets (Abraham, Moses, etc.) into Heaven. This tends to be a more Catholic dogma, and presumably these people were in "Limbo", a place actually not in Hell, but in Hell at the same time (make sense? they weren't really being punished, but they couldn't go to heaven nonetheless). It's in the original Apostle's Creed, but not the Protestant one.
So, he descended into Hell, then ascended into Heaven, at least according to this.

Some say ascend, some say descend, I think He was dead. As in no longer existing for 3 days. Call it hell if you will, but that's what I think.
