How do I keep my longhaired (birman) cat cool in our Australian summer?

My cat gets hot in our summer what can i do t keep her cool?

Hi, I have no air con, so on really hot days, I get a cold wet face washer and wipe my cat, and pat it on her head - she loves it!!!!

Also, you can buy these "pet wipes" for cats, which are like wet ones, which are cold, and you wipe their head, face and body. It cleans them and has a cooling sensation. My brother bought me some and my cat thinks it's great. Maybe Pets Paradise stock them?

Insulation works both ways. It keeps heat in and it can keep it out. Everyone gets hot in the summer. Just make sure your cat has a shady place to lay and cool water to drink....try a crockery bowl for water instead of plastic...and she will be fine. A nice breeze from a fan will do, if you don't have air conditioning.

One of my good friends is a groomer, and he will trim long haired animal's coats in the summer, but he says it only makes the owner feel better and usually the animal look ridiculous.

Take kitty to a groomer and have her fur trimmed shorter or shaved altogether. If that's not an option, then keep her in the bathroom as much as possible where she can lay down on the cool tiles or linoleum. When she gets too hot, give her a quick dip in the bathtub to cool off. Or you can wipe her ears, paws, belly and face with a cool wet hand towel. That's what I do when my kitties get tooooo hot during our summers.

Hi Laura.... some people will shave their kitties (e.g. lion cut) to help them stay cool in the summer, however it isn't always the most appealing way other than keeping them in an air conditioned room.
