Spanking, striking and yelling at your dog will get you exactly *nowhere*. It's a shame to see all of these posters suggesting these ineffective punishments. Yes, your dog needs to get the message that barking is not OK and will earn him a trip to his crate, or to a quiet room for a time out. This will be effective if you're taking him away from a fun playtime type of situation - you will need to take him away quickly, without making him even more excited! You will also need to repeat this several times until he understands "When I start yapping, the fun's suddenly over!" since you say he's yapping all the time. Be patient and give him treats for being quiet, and ignore him when he's yapping.
It may be that you will need to keep your son's dog separate from yours for a while. it may be too hard for your dog to be quied when his pal is around. Will they have times to play together when they can do what they want? I'd hate to think that your Lhasa was going to be totally isolated because of this.

There are bark stop devices you can get at petsmart (or some place similar and a few are on ebay) that can detect barking and send out an ultrasonic sound which only dogs can hear and don't like. If your dog is smart, put the device up high and move it around so the dog doesn't figure out it's the device making the sound and can't get to it and chew it. I curbed one dog who was about to lose his home from excessive barking with one of these. The best thing is you can use it even when you're not home.
The problem I've seen with shock collars is that if your dog freaks out when you're not home and can't stop themselves from barking, they can burn holes into their skin from the amount of shocking. My sister had a neighbor kid that would throw rocks at her dog when she wasn't home and the dog would freak and continuously bark and eventually burned holes in the skin on her neck. There are citronella collars which spray stinky citronella when your dog barks.
A dog can not eat or drink normally with a muzzle on so behavior modification is a much better solution.
I'd also be sure not to pet the dog to "calm" them if they get in a barking frenzy or even if they are barking at all. Dogs see petting as affection and reinforcement and if you do that when they're barking they'll think it's a good thing.
Good luck!

Different things work for different dogs.
A shake container (small rocks in an aspirin bottle or can) shaken as soon as it barks will distract it. That works when the dog was startled into a bark by a strange noise.
You can try being the alpha dog by placing your hand on top of her nose as soon as she barks and telling her shh. That should work if she believes you're in charge.
A quick squirt with a water bottle will work to distract your dog.
If everything else fails, you can get a bark collar. They're around $50 and it's very important you get the right size for your dog. They emit a small shock when your dog barks and will make it afraid to bark. I've known them to work but I find it to be a cruel way to handle a problem that consistency will usually cure.

lot of stupid answers on here. why is she yapping? does she want something? do you pay attention to her? do you have a clue what dogs need? yeah it's possible that she picked up what the other dogs do. but why do the other dogs yap? or maybe she doesn't like being with those dogs and is trying to tell you that. Just love how people have animals and don;t have a clue how to deal with them........ did you do ANY research before you got it? maybe you should now. They ARE NOT little people. that's your first clue. they don't think like us and if you treat them like little people, they will treat you like a dog!!!!! come down to their level and get some education on it. Get a book .... Problem Behavior in Dogs by William Campbell. will enlighten you on how dogs thinks. They don't see, hear, or react to things like people, so don't treat them like they are people.

I am shocked at some of the replies you've received... shame on you people.
I handle (confirmation) a couple dogs for a local breeder, they aren't trained before they arrive at my home and I don't "put up with" excessive barking (my dog is very quiet) or unacceptable behaviour.
First off and most importantly: You need to become "alpha" of your pack. Learn to growl at the dog to gain it's respect, please don't hit your dog, but if you need to take it one step further... dominate the dog by holding it to the ground (pinning it) lightly for a minute or two or at least it stops wiggling. This will gain you "respect" from your pack.
Now to stop the barking: When the dog starts to bark, pick a word (stick to it) and yell it until he does, if he doesn't stop... "growl at" or "pin" the dog... he will soon learn what is acceptable and what isn't. Please remember to use a dominant voice and to NEVER HIT OR PHYSICALLY HURT YOUR DOG.
some good words are: hey, enough, no, hush, shut up, be quiet, stop
(no and stop are good because the word can be used to STOP other undesirable actions).
NEVER USE A CRATE, MUZZLE, SHAKE CAN, WATER GUN on your dog... you will end up messing the dog up emotionally. You simply need to become ALPHA of your pack.
