The main difference between fruits and vegetables is that fruits have the seeds within them. Apples, oranges, etc. What makes this difficult is that some fruits are also considered vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Technically, a fruit is the part of the plant that develops from the flower. The apple from the blossom, the hips on the rose plant, etc.
Normally, a vegetable is a root, tuber, or part of a fruit, such as a bean (though green and yellow beans are technically fruits), or leaves. Vegetables are also such things as asparagus or brussell sprouts which are parts of the plant that are not fruits.
Sometimes, the government steps in and declares a fruit a vegetable, such as tomatoes, and then does really stupid stuff like trying to claim that a serving of ketchup is actually a vegetable serving. Such is life.

The technical definition of a fruit is the (often fleshy) part of a plant that surrounds the seeds. By this definition, tomatoes, apples, pumpkins, eggplants, squashes, rose hips, peppers, peapods, cucumbers, and corn kernels are all fruits. All other edible plant parts are considered vegetables. Lettuce, carrots, and spinach are examples of vegetables.
The popular definitions of fruit and vegetable are somewhat different from the technical definitions. Most people categorize "vegetables" as foods that are eaten as part of a meal's main course and "fruits" as foods that are eaten for dessert or as a snack.

A fruit is actually the sweet, ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed-bearing plant. A vegetable, in contrast, is an herbaceous plant cultivated for an edible part (seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs, tubers, or nonsweet fruits). So, to be really nitpicky, a fruit could be a vegetable, but a vegetable could not be a fruit.

All fruits have seeds, and NO vegetables have seeds. Tomato and cucumbers are commonly mistaken for vegetables, but they are actually fruits because they have seeds.
