Last Christmas when my daughter was 9 she started have doubts about Santa and questioned me. There's no easy way to tell them, however, rather than just flat out telling her there was no Santa, I explained that Santa is more of a symbol of the fun and giving at Christmas. We of course also talked about the real reason we celebrate Christmas which is the birth of Christ. She shed a few tears about Santa, but I rather she heard it from me than someone at school, or be made fun of by other kids because she still believed. Good luck :)

They will figure it out. My son was 10 and he had real doubts. That year we went to my parents for Christmas Eve and then drove home through the night (6 hour drive) on the way we listened to the NORAD reports.

My son had questioned the existence of Santa all that fall, I did not argue or discuss with him. But that night when we left my parents, he saw deer prints in the snow, in my parent's driveway, he had not seen any evidence of deer there before.

When we left home, we did not have an tree up, I told my son, since we were getting home on the 25th and leaving on the 26th for a hockey tournament that I was not going to bother, we had some little decorations around.

Well a friend came over while we were gone, put up the tree and put out the presents for us. So at 3:30 AM we walked in to a house that was decorated and filled with gifts. My son, wide eyed replied - Mom, there is a Santa Claus!

By the next year, he realized he was wrong, but he says that was his best Christmas ever. He is 20 now and every year he still gets presents from Santa, Frosty and Rudolph.

Children start to realize it on their own. When I found out there was no Santa I stayed up all night long until like 1:00am. And when Santa never came at midnight like my mom said I found out there was no Santa. But anyways there was a such thing as Santa Clause. A long time ago there was a man that took everything he had and bought and made presents for poor children. Well anyways that man died but we still carry on the tradition. So if you want to tell your kids that there is no such thing as Santa today then tell them about this man because it is a true story. Then they won't feel sad. Check out this link.

My husband's family pretty much had it as "When you stop believing you get nothing!" so he believed in Santa till he moved out. lol

My oldest daughter pretty much found out about the tooth fairy last year at the age of 9. She asked a lot questions about Santa and I didn't know how to deal with it so I just kept with it. Yes I do believe in Santa the same way I believe in God. Well this year thought she asked me over and over again so finally we had to give it to her. I was shocked when she cried and said , "You mean YOU eat the cookies!" It broke my heart as it did hers. I always tell my kids not to lie and felt like I had lied to her.

Then though I pulled out the story about "Yes Virgina there is a Santa". I explained to her that Santa is a special feeling you have. I explained about Saint Nick and how he was real man. Still she said, "So it's you and dad, hu??" She seemed hurt and mad. I told her yes it was. I told her how her grandparents did Santa with me when I was little and how Mimi & Pepaw did the same with her daddy. When we had kids we decided to keep Santa alive each Christmas. I asked her to think of Christmas with out Santa. How would it feel going to the mall and no Santa??? This seemed to help soften the blow. Ofcourse then we explained now to tell her little brother & sister. How would see feel if they didn't get excited about Santa? So now she is playing along with mommy & daddy and having fun.

Honestly it is up to you. Let your kids ask you and also make sure they can handle it too. I didn't think my little girl would cry. I just remember finding out from my friends and shrugging it off. Try to hang on to Santa as long as you can. Also if you want do what my husband's parents did "When you stop beleiving in Santa he'll stop coming!!!"

I don't believe in lying to kids. Last year the 7 year old said they told her at school there was no Santa, she has a 4 year old brother. I asked her what she thought. Kids are smart, she turned the tables on me and without blinking I told her in my heart I believe, I believe in all the magic and joy of the season, I believe that there are few times in the world that all people set aside their differences and bless this day. She looked at me and said "I believe too".

I dont know if you should tell them. If it is getting to the point were they will get hurt by it from someone at school then ya tell them. I found out around 9 by myself. But I would say around 8 or 9 is a good age.

Just tell them straight up. My parents did, I always knew Santa, the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny where all not real when I was a kid. It didn't scar me for life or anything.

You dont need to tell them anything. They will find out on their own. My kids are ages 9, 7 and 3 and they have already started to figure it out. They know Im the one who goes Christmas shopping, etc...
