Wow you have a long time to think. My husband is in the navy and I'm in the Coast guard. I think there is more to do in the Coast Guard then in the navy. They seem to treat him more like a number then a person. The navy moral is very down too. I joined the Coast guard more for law enforcement. And because they were a smaller brach. You are seen more as a person then a number. But this is my point of view. Go talk to both recruiters. They will tell you the down side of both and what there upsides are. If you have any questions write me. Between my husband and me we can probably tell you.

Im 13 too.My parents said they can do 20,000 dollars yearly for college and the rest of the cash I might have to do with military scholarship because Harvard or Stanford cost like 30,000 dollars. I am from India and not like a U.S patriot but more of like a India-U.S alliance patriot you know with the flags crossing. If you want adventure (or hell once they invade Iran and there is a WW3 and we are drafted ha ha) then the navy is good. You actually get to the sea and fight. The cost guard has been usefull to the U.S (maybe not in Pearl Harbor) but you pretty much fly over sea and look for suspicious activity or simply protect the homeland. Not much action though but atleast you stay alive and you are still paid. For some reason I get the feeling that if you or I join the military at the age of 18 we will be seeing a lot of action if the whole Iran invasion thing happens. Both the navy and coast guard are safe at the moment and the navy is simply transferring supplies and flying planes over Iraq right now.Coast guard is just a look out.I would go with the navy because sea battles with severe death tolls are not common anymore because its usually land vs. sea these days.In the navy you get action and you are safe at the same time to a certain point that is.In the navy you get to fly on planes a lot more then coast guard and it sort of fun.

I have a good friend that was a seabee and he learned so much doing that that now he's loaded because of the business he started. He has nothing but praise for the navy...though he still puts ketchup on absolutely everything he eats b/c he got so used to doing it then.
Also remember the coast guard is actually part of the navy and in war time you can be deployed as navy.
But you have years to worry about it! Enjoy being a kid b/c it ends faster than you think!

Well I'm going for the Navy Seals in Feb so id say navy. But why not both. One after the other. I would (when you get older) talk to a recruiter and see which you think you will like more. Both are very cool.

You are too young, but when you reach 18 years of age,
go into the US Navy first, which is for 4 years and then
enlist into the US Coast Guard, which is also 4 years.
GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in the army ,but I won't joke or try to sell you ,just ask ANY NAVY VET about firefighting and painting- most coasties go home at night-most sailors live in cramped qtrs .if you want travel the navy is hard to beat but if you want A LIFE ,go coast guard

Well if you are thinking about goiing to sea I would recomend the Navy.

Those small ships are fun but you would not want to live on one or even spend all day on one in all kinds of weather.

I was on an Air Craft Carrier. Its a floating city and I never got rained on. I was a mag rat!

Whichever one floats your boat, so to speak. Enjoy your childhood in the meantime, you'll never get it back. There are advantages to either one, it just depends on your personality and what you're willing to sacrifice. Who knows, in 5 years you might just actually want to go straight to college.
