For every action there is equal and opposite reaction. But in human conduct at times it does not appear to have happened, because of varying factors. If one escapes the consequence in this life it is certainly carried over to the next. None of our action goes waste in the scheme of Nature and her Laws. This is what a Hindu believes.

In my religion, there is no "punishment" per se. There is accountability, and what energy we send out comes back to us, but it is not punishment.
If we fail to learn what we were meant to learn in this life, the lessons may need to be repeated, but again, that's not punishment, just accountability.
Before some say this is being easy on a murderer or sex offender, please recognize that that too is energy or experience that will need to be accounted for by the person who did it. I just don't use the word "Punishment" as it implies a scolding from God, rather than a karmic debt.

There will always be conseqences for or bad behavior in this life. But our sins are forgiven if we receive Jesus as our personal savior. He took all of the punishment needed to deliver us into heaven as white as snow.

What a person focuses their intent on is what is manifested around them. We punish ourselves, there is no one else who ever will. That why it is written, Judge not least ye be judged. as we judge others we are also judging ourselves. If you allow yourself to forgive you then there will be no carry over. Heaven and Hell are only thoughts. I prefer heavenly loving thoughts rather than hellish judgemental ones.

It depends if you have Christ in your life or not. If you do, then you look at things differently. Oh yeah, and when you say 'punished' what do you mean? Do you mean dying of loved ones, hardships, trials? Well, those are tests for you to grow in faith. If you are talking about 'aftershocks' of sin, then, those are consequences. These consequences are not always felt here on earth. Remember that your actions have eternal consequences. This doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to go to hell. As I have said earlier, we need Christ. If we confess our sins to Him, He is surely going to forgive us if we are sincere in asking for forgiveness.

When you die, you're dead. That's it.
