Goldens can be great family dogs, but unfortunately the breeding to attain the desired traits has left some undesirable ones as well such as a frequent occurrence of hip dysplasia in pure bred goldens. Look into getting a golden retirever mix of some sort.
You're doing the right thing by looking to adopt a dog in need of a good home. When working with shelters and rescue groups you do have to be a little patient if you are looking for a specific breed of dog and not be limited to young puppies only. Puppies grow up pretty quickly and are dogs for the rest of their lives so getting a full grown dog isn't that bad. Many rescue groups require applications, interviews, and home visits to assure these animals are going to good placements. Keep your eyes on the various groups, fill out the applications even if they do not currently have a dog you want (that way they can contact you with potential adoptees), and remember that sometimes the dog you are meant to have finds you instead. Below are a few different rescue groups and shelters. Try googling for any groups in any states. Many times volunteers will help get the dog transported to you.

It's not really a great idea to have a dog shipped to you anyway. Usually, you want to know the breeder, meet the mother, inspect the kennel, and just get a feel for the whole operation. Anyone who would just ship you a dog without asking any questions should not be used.
Petfinder, as of this posting, has over 2600 Goldie and Goldie mixes available nationwide (assuming you are in the US - some are even in Canada).
http://www.grca-nrc.org/Localrescues.htm is a link to the Goldie rescue page. I'm guessing that there are probably at least a hundred up for rescue across the US from these groups.
If you still don't have any luck, then your next step is to find a responsible and ethical breeder. You don't have to get a show dog, but they frequently have pet-quality dogs for less expensive than you would pay from an irresponsible place, like a Backyard breeder such as the above "Jade" and "Niner Rosie", a puppy mill, or a pet shop. Many of these people use craig's list, puppyfind, the newspaper, the Internet, and spamming YA questions to sell their puppies - this is not an ethical breeder. Avoid them at all costs.
Here is a good place to start, the Golden Retriver Club of America: http://www.grca.org/PEC/ Be sure to click on the links at the bottom of the article.
I hope I've helped you a little bit; Good Luck in your search. : )

Google golden retriever rescue, for your area, mine is North Texas. Most of the Goldens are older, but you could wait for a younger one, that costs too, and they insist that you keep them indoors. I had a Golden, a rescue from a co-worker for nine years, she got bone cancer and I had to have her put to sleep in May. Get this, three days later we were going to the lake, and saw some kids giving away puppies, two looked just like Goldens, but the kids said they were a Lab mix. I took the female, and today, she is eight months old, and even my vet cannot believe that she is mixed. Buffy is a beautiful blond Golden. What a sweetie, I will always have a Golden.

well i don't have to look for any because i breed the golden retrievers and i have 4 of them. i have a ltter right now and they will be 5 weeks this weekend. check your local paper and try the golden retriever rescue website. also you can get the dog fancy magazine and in the back the website for the golden rescue is listed in the breeder section. when you find one be careful if you have the dog shipped because i have seen that when they are shipped they are sick and it is hard to get your money back or get another one. do alot of looking before you just choose the first one you see.

Goldens are wonderful family dogs!! Mine is smart, fun and so lovable! They can be very expensive and unfortunately all breeders aren't very trustworthy! My advice... do your research! If you choose to go to a breeder check out where the dogs are bred and where they are kept.
I would really recommend waiting until January and checking out the shelters again. After the holidays unfortunately many families give their new pet back because they can't take care of them. They find out how much responsibility it is to take care of a dog and then the shelters begin to overflow with purebred dogs. Maybe you can put your name on a waiting list. Good luck!

check out petfinder. you can search on type of dog and find golden and golden mixs. My pup had a golden retriever father and a brittany spaniel mom and she is just great dog. I found her on petfinder through an animal rescue. A lot of the resuces do a great job on matching the right dog for the right person. You just have to be patient with petfinder. It took me almost 3 months to find my pup. Make sure you are searching by breed, not rescue in your area.

No need for a golden with papers. We visited a home where we saw both parents and could tell they were full blooded. We bought our Daisy for a mere $250. with no papers. She is amazing! We will never own another dog. She is only a year and a half and acts like a little old lady. She can fetch, sit, stay, shake a paw, and swim! All without professional training. We have two boys 7 and 9 and she loves them.. She is great with guests and everything! Don't pay those high prices!!!

Check with a golden retriever rescue. Just search on-line and you can find one in your area. I don't know what state you are in or I would be able to head you in the right direction. If you can't find one on-line, check with the shelters they might have a listing for the rescue.

Well, we have a whole batch of newborn golden puppies, but we will sell them locally, mostly to families that we know. We aren't charging much, because there is more to pets than making money. They will have papers, because our adults do.
Goldens are the very best dogs to have around kids and they are so smart. They shed alot and they need lots of exercise, but ours have become part of our family and we love them sooo much.
Good luck to you. You will love having a Golden!
