Amblyopia is a reduction or dimness of vision. It does not result from a change in refraction (the lens' curvature that when misaligned causes either nearsightedness or farsightedness) or from any visible changes in the eye.

Strabismus is the deviation of one eye from the other when the person is looking at an object caused by weak or hypertonic (excessive contracting) muscle in one of the eyes. The deviation may be upward, downward, inward or outward. Strabismus in children requires early intervention. Strabismus may be caused by neuromuscular disorders of the eye muscle, diseases involving the cerebral hemispheres, or thyroid disease.

More than likely the physician has determined that the cause of the problem are the muscles that control the movement of the eyes. For this reason, they will try to readjust the muscles using the glasses. The eye patch is typically used when one of the eyes is weaker than the other. When the stronger eye is covered, the weaker eye will try to refocus and move in a erratic manner. The surgery may be to either stimulate the muscle fibers existing or possible replace them.

4 of my siblings had amblyopia and corrective surgery. All were successful surgeries. Recovery was very quick and not a great deal of pain. Of course, any surgery has its risks but all-in-all, it is a simple, safe surgery with a very high success rate.
