you can claim children as dependents on you federal income tax return if they lived with you at least 6 months , they may also qualify for unearn income credit. check it out www.irs.gov

Generally, the custodial parent can claim them unless there's a written agreement with the other parent to the contrary.

If someone other than a parent, like a grandparent, has legal custody and provides more than half of the child's support, then they can claim them.

Because my previous employer had her kids as his dependents. The mother pay more taxes than him because the father got the dependents
