What does the RF Adaptor do?

I am connecting my Super Nes to the tv. Just wondering if missing that cord could be why it isn't working...

The RF adapter is what you need to connect the SNES to your TV. It has a black connector that plugs into your SNES. Then a coax RF connector to plug into your antenna port in the back of your TV. This is for people who have an old TV with no composite or s-video ports.
