they want to be acknowledged.
people generally like to be acknowledged. when they acknowledge another, they force the other to acknowledge them (in large cities, however, people learn to ignore others, otherwise we would all be overwhelmed with the acknowledging of others).
when someone smiles at you, they are most likely expressing their need for human emotional connection; they want to be acknowledged.
what is it about being acknowledged? when someone acknowledges you, they are affirming your existence, and in doing so giving it meaning. people need meaning, and social interaction is one place people look for meaning.

You seem a bit paranoid. Could it be that there are still some nice people out there in the world? I tend to smile at people when I walk by them; I think it's my nature because I work in retail. Don't worry so much- just give a friendly smile back and everyone will feel warm toward you!

Don't read into it too much, especially if the smiles are coming from strangers. People use smiles as a form of initial communication. They are basically saying that I am friendly and won't bite. Not all societies are like this though but this pretty much applies to american culture in general.

Its another way of saying "Hi" to you! I smile at people all the time. It has nothing to do with age, or anything to do with being better or special kid or anything like that. I/They just like to smile at people. Because its another way of saying "Hi" to people.
Because people have realized that when people say "Hi" to people they don't say "Hi" Back. So when people smile at people (No matter what the age) its most likely they will get a response with a smile then with a "Hi" Back.
The people that smile at you don't even know you. And no they don't hate you. Smiling is a sign that they like you as a person not dislike you.

They think you are funny looking!?!
Seriously, though! Many people often smile at another when they find that person attractive or interesting!
Try not to worry so much or see a doctor for some help! Using medicine is not a bad thing in this day and age! I do!!!

Depends on the person, could be creepy, could be warm, this is why we socialize and get to know people so we can make informed decisions about whether or not to smile back.
