Yes, but the cool thing though is that you are associated with the best of BOTH worlds!!
You have the comforts of living in an organized, human-rights sensitive (America is a great place to express your ideas) democratic society or community which acknowledges (for the most part) all religions' and cultures' right to exist, and you have the great gift and privilege of being a Muslim!
How much better can it get?!

I am an American who converted to Islam, so I don't know if your question applies to my situation, but I'll answer any way. My husband is Arab, and at first it was difficult adjusting to another culture. It got a lot easier after a while, though, and now the culture I adopted, and the religion I am practicing are so much a part of myself, that it's just like breathing to me. I don't even think about it. I have my own little world that is a hybrid of American/Islamic ways, and I've found that I fit into that world just fine. Peace and blessings.

I'm an American born Muslim :)
It can be really difficult for some growing up here - for me though, I think its pretty darn tootin' awesome. I love being a practicing Muslim and I love being American. For some, they're mutually exclusive - for me, it's a balance.
Because Islam has more of an effect on my life, if it prohibits something which the American culture accepts (such as drinking, promiscuity, etc), I steer clear from it. If Islam doesn't prohibit it, then its probably something uber cool - like free speech :D

It must be very difficult for American-born Muslims to live in between 2 cultures..
I do have a lot of respect for how you do so with grace and patience.
