I bought a new Insignia tv and it only has an 'audio in' jack in the back of it. I want to hook a receiver up to it but the tv needs an audio out jack for the receiver to work. is there a converter i can buy or a seperate av out jack?

The "standard" setup in your situation is, as mentioned above, to run the audio from the cable box straight to the receiver, but then you won't have audio w/o the receiver, of course; even if the receiver has audio out & you attach that to the TV, you'll probably have to have the receiver on for it to pass-through the sound to the TV if you want to watch w/o the receiver (i.e.,on the TV spk.) for some reason.

There is another possibility: if the TV has a jack for stereo headphones, you can buy a mini-DIN - to - RCA adapter for $5-10 & send the audio out to the receiver that way. Of course, if the jack is on the front of the TV it's going to look pretty ugly w/cables coming out the front of it; and since most such jacks turn off the TV speaker(s), you'll still have to use either the receiver OR the TV spk., but never both; and that setup is very likely to degrade the audio signal. You'll get the best sound out of the receiver with a direct connection to it.

A third option would be to split the audio signal as it comes out of the cable box, running one to TV & the other to the receiver, but that too could noticeably degrade your audio signal.

A hard way to learn the lesson (I learned it the same way!:) that you ALWAYS check the connections before buying a TV to make sure it has the in/out capabilities you want. And BTW, I've found very few TVs do have audio out, & the ones that do usually include that feature at quite a premium (typically only high-end models).

read the manual on both pieces of equipment. they will tell you what each one needs individually.

the basic Input/Output config. for insignia TVs
HDMI Inputs No

DVI Inputs No

S-Video Inputs No

Component Video Inputs No

Composite Inputs 1

PC Inputs No

RF Antenna Input Yes

Front A/V Inputs 1

Headphone Jacks Yes

A/V Outputs No

Audio Outputs No

we would have to know what model of television you have to answer.

basically though the TV needs two things to work.
-plugged into electric.
-source.
Cable
DVD
SAT.
Entertainment System
Audio/Video jacks

if the source is cable or sattellite, it must first come from the main cable to a reciever, or directly to a TV. all cable wire.

dvd players, game consols, etc. all use A/V jacks (red white yellow) some also have coaxial jacks, both audio and video in one wire. these are connected to the appropriate female jacks on the tv.

if all else fails, just go to radio shack and ask one of them. tell them the TV brand and name and the reciever.

You need to look for an audio input jack, not an output jack. Audio output is for a sound system. Audio input will play through your TV. With no input jack, you'll need a separate sound system for the PS4.

if all you have is audio in, then your never going to get audio out unless you take apart the tv and modify it by putting in your own jack...which i did ,,lol. sorry, but most people would just have to get the right tv.

Are you actually using an over-the-air signal or something where the signal is going into the TV first?

Because normally it would go cable/dish box-->receiver-->TV (video)/stereo speakers (audio).

What did that TV Cost, cause that is Super Cheap!!!! There is no adapter to reverse an IN to an OUT, though it does not make sense that there is an Audio IN.

A competent technician should be able to install one for a few hundred bucks, It's not hard to do It's just that a competent techician gets paid a lot. Plus he/she will have to buy a service manual, and they're not cheap either.
