i want to start including flax seeds into my diet... is it best ground or whole? As well, ive heard that it should be stored in the fridge, but when i buy them, they are kept at room temp. in the bulk section. Is its nutritional value diminished? Do health food stored keep them at cooler temps?

Storage - Bulk flax seed which is clean, dry and of good quality, can be stored at room temperature for up to a year. For optimum freshness, ground flax seed should be ground as needed. Unused ground flax seed can be refrigerated in an airtight container if it will be used in just a matter of days, or it can be stored in the freezer for about a month. Store your remaining bulk flax seeds in a dark, dry, and cool place.

Recommended Daily Usage - To get the maximum benefits from flax seeds we recommend using 3 tbsp of ground flax seed per day.

One tablespoon of ground flax seeds and three tablespoons of water may serve as a replacement for one egg in baking by binding the other ingredients together, and ground flax seeds can also be mixed in with oatmeal, yogurt, water (similar to Metamucil), or any other food item where a nutty flavour is appropriate. [citation needed] Flaxseed oil is most commonly consumed with salads or in capsules.

the best way to get flax seeds is to buy the whole seeds in bulk and grind them yourself in a coffee grinder. If you don't have time for that then you can get flaxseeds already ground and vacuum sealed so they don't oxidize. The best product is the FiProFlax from Health From the Sun. You can also get this product in a single serve packaging. This has major benefit of protecting highly fragile flax meal from oxidizing between servings. You don't want air to get to them. Try to avoid it as much as possible.

Ground is better, whole will pass straight through your system with no benefit. It is okay to have them at room temp when you buy them, but they last longer if refrigerated......Some health food stores sell them at room temp, some refrigerated. Generally speaking, once the package is OPEN put it in the fridge for better/longer benefit and to keep weevils out
