It may be distantly possible but only by Highly qualified people who have a deep knowledge of Internet or by hackers.
Usually a person is tracked by the IP address that it is using. But I have not come across any Messenger that displays the IP address of its user.
Any one who can find out the IP address of the user can track the user.

Comes up at the bottom right-hand corner on my computer on Yahoo Messenger when somone has come online and gone offline - just a case of ticking the right preferences box - ok ?
