This guy in my class is talking to me and fooling around with me. I like him, but I just want to be absolutely sure that he likes me. He talks to me and when we pass each other, he says hi. Sometimes, I catch him staring at me, but then he looks away. He loves sports and, I think, is impressed by my athletic skills.
Does he like me, or does he just want to be my friend?

These are all signs of interest. But he's just shy.
Go up to him and sit and chat, if he shows nervousness he likes you.
just strike up a conversation about school, music, sports.
if he keeps the conversation going he likes you.
good chances he does.
invite him to watch a movie at your or his place on the week end

Sounds like he liked you to me, but maybe he really likes you as a friend. Keep up the friendship stuff keep interacting with him, eventually it'll come out how he truly feels. You could suggest ice cream or something and see how he responds. If he's real excited, "Yes of course!!" he may like you, if he says "uh yeah sure!" he's probaly a friend.

One of the easiest ways to know if a guy likes you is if he gives you quick glances and stares at you every so often. Watch him and if he looks at you quite often from time to time, HE LIKES YOU!
