3 to the 4th power gives you 81. 3 is the base, 4 is the exponent (power). it just simplifies the expression. for instance, 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = (3) to the 4th power. what happens if you had 2 x 2 x 2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 ? same thing it equals 2 to the 12th power because you're multiplying 2 by itself twelve times.
