Spanish and Portuguese are both what are called Romance languages, for the reason that they both have their roots in the Romans who spoke Latin.
When the Romans occupied the Iberian penninsula (Portugal,Spain) the natives of those areas began to learn Latin. However, the Latin spoken by the Roman soldiers varied. For example, English is the language of the U.S but there are many different types of English accents. In the same way, the Romans all spoke Latin but without a doubt spoke with different accents depending on the area they came from. These different varieties of spoken Latin mixed with the languages spoken by the natives of the Iberian Penninsula to form all the Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Catalan, Gallego, Romanian, etc)
Although all of these languages all have their roots in Latin, and thus are in some cases mutually understable by their speakers (for example, a Portuguese speaker will understand a Spanish speaker, a Spanish speaker will probably understand slow Italian or Portuguese, etc) the languages have very different pronunciations, many different words, and slightly different grammars.
Therefore, Spanish and Portuguese, although extremely similar, are two different languages. Although when compared to the other Romance languages, Spanish and Portuguese are the most similar of all the Romance languages.
A few examples:
SPA: Yo quiero ir a comer con mi mama.
POR: Eu quero ir comer com minha mae.
SPA: El otro dia tu fuiste a la tienda para comprar ropa.
POR: O outro dia tu foste a loja para comprar roupa.
SPA: El espanol es muy parecido al portugues.
POR: O espanhol e muito parecido com o portugues.
An interesting fact is that Portuguese speakers will generally not have too much difficulty understanding a Spanish speaker while a Spanish speaker will very likely not understand anything a Portuguese speaker says if it is spoken at a normal speed.

Spanish is the people of Spain and portuguese is the people of Portugal.The 2 countries are in Europe side by side.In Spain there are many matadors.Islam had spread to Spain until Cordoba so there are many mosques.Portugal has a historical relationship with Timor Leste.

They are entirely two different languages. If you give a Portuguese sentence to someone who speaks only Spanish, they wouldn't be able to understand it. Its like giving an english person a french sentence and asking them to make sense of it.

Do you mean the languages? In Portuguese has more of a french influence on its language, Spanish more Greek. Also the letters B and V interchange in the two.

They are different languages, spoken in different countries. They have similar histories, and many words in common. They have words pronounced similar or the same but spelled differently. Other words are spelled the same but pronounced differently. They have phrases that are similar words, but have vastly different connotations in their society. They are about as similar as Dutch and German.
