A prediction is like the weather forecast ... they predict what they think the weather may be. If it is a five-day forecast, the prediction may change 8 times before the day arrives.
It was said that radio stations that predicted 30% chance of rain ... that indicated there were 10 people working at the station and three of the ten thought it would rain.
Predictions ... like predictions of election voting, etc., etc. And people can think, well, they got that right, or they got that wrong, or they came close on that one.
Prophecy is to state what is going to happen. Either they are right or they are wrong. False prophets are those who say something that doesn't happen.
For example:
In April 2006 the Sun tabloid (American Media Inc., publisher) front pages news that the world will end on Sept. 11th 2006 and follows with a very persuasive article.
Was that a prophecy? Did it happen? I think NOT. Therefore it was a false prophecy, and a false prophet!!
A very interesting issue, too ... in that they declare the world will end on Sept. 11th, 2006 and yet:
Further back in the same paper they have an article which they claim tells the USA Presidents' names through to 2056. Though the USA may have a feeling of self-importance, somehow the rest of us rather doubt they will continue even if the world does end!

Prophecy can be a prediction of the future but it doesn't have to be. Prophecy is when God gives a message to a person to pass along to others. It could have to do with the future or it might be about the present.
1 Corinthians 14:3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

Prophecy is perhaps sent from God to a prophet. Any one can make a prediction. There is nothing to say that either will come true.

A prediction is a calculated guess, based on the persons knowlege of the subject.
Daniel and Revelation, are the two most prophetic books in the Bible. Prophetic words were spoken in the name of God. Predictions can be spoken by anyone.

Prediction: is to 'forecast' what is to come. It is to make a conjecture as to what is to come.
Prophecy: is to be told by God what is to occur and so is far more absolute then a human guess.
