I was on topamax for a year before I quit taking it. It did help my migraines tremendously. I went from 3-4 a week to 1 every 2-3 months.
However, not having the migraine was not worth all the other problems and side effects. During the first few weeks of use, severe depression is common, extreme fatigue.. I couldn't do anything but sleep. After a few months on it I had tingling in my face, hands and feet to the point of numbness.
It also messes up the way certain things taste especially tea and pop.
It can also cause kidney stones... If you have a history of stones, you should NOT take it. I have 4-5 stones that I have been waiting to pass for over 6 months now.

And after about the 9th month my hair started falling out and I quit taking it not long after that. All the symptoms cleared up pretty quick( except the stones)
Talk to your Dr. there are also other migraine preventative meds out there.

Good Luck with your migraines.

I have been on it for 2-3 years. The short term side effects were not bad. Mainly tingling in the hands and feet which lasted for a month or two. It altered my taste buds... no more carbonated drinks like coke and dr. pepper. Other than that I went from migraines that lasted 4-10 days to maybe 1-2 a month and those only last a few hours to a day. I will take almost any side effects though to keep these migraines away. They were killer. I say take it and you will know if it doesn't work on you. But if it does, you will never regret it.

I've been on Topamax since 1999. It's a seizure medication. It helped me alot and that was one of the better medications I was on. You have to be careful becuase it can make you lose weight. I went from 179-125 and went down in dosage becuase I was losing to much. I've tapered off and done much better on less medication.

I take Topomax for Essential Tremors. It works awesome for me. The only side effect I get is my appetite goes way down. Sometimes I have to make myself eat. This side effect was pointed out to me by my Doctor. Hope this helps,
