Both: belief in God and being good... both are essential for leading a harmonious life. Why?
Belief and faith in God helps strengthening our resolve that we as a human being are capable of finding a solution to every problem. We need not every time run to a church for guidance from the pastors.
We may be a very good person but do not believe in God. What will happen when unjustified harm comes our way? It was solely destined for us. Can we just blame God and sit tight and do nothing.
We have to keep prepared for everything all the time. Why must we let go our daily prayers unless we are really tight on schedule. The best businessmen, good people all over the world always find time to pray to God when not in need.
In times of need... everyone prays to God! What of those who pray from their heart all the time. It is these prayers which truly are heard by God. Rest is all a matter of speculation!
Being good is our nature. We are born human beings... the highest manifest stage in our cosmic life cycle. We have already crossed the stages of being an insect, plant and an animal. Now we have reached the manifest stage of becoming a human being. It is only as a human being that we can gain enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (aka moksha in Hinduism).
Only believing in God and not behaving like a gentleman will also not help. We have to maintain our minimum standards as a human being. It is a different matter that in the present Kali Yuga (the metal age) it sometimes becomes difficult to differentiate animals from human beings. Hypocrisy and lawlessness is the order of the day.
We have to choose amongst the two paths! We definitely can choose both. More here- http://www.godrealized.com/faith.html

It is impossible for man to be righteous. He will always fall short. And be sure that the devil will always be waiting for him so he can tell him how unworthy he is as a result. This is the dilemma of works over grace.
Fortunately for man, the devil did not understand the true nature of God. When he sent us his only begotten son, the devil thought if he could get us (human kind) not the "Romans" or the "Jews" but human kind to slay Him. To slay the very One God sent to save us, he would be able to have our souls forever. That no good work could ever redeem such a horrible defiant act of pure evil.
But to his dismay Christ was the passover lamb. The pure Sacrifice. The blood of which when recognized would free all of human kind from death and sin itself. When the first nail was hammered into his wrist and he cried out "Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing!" The devil was defeated, the Roman empire fell, and the Salvation of the world was won in triumphant Glory.
So I say to you to believe in God is much better than to be a good person. For if you are a good person today, you may make a mistake and think you are damned, but if you believe in God you will naturally try to do good and when you fail you will know that you are forgiven

The most important thing you will ever do is to put your trust in what the Lord Jesus Christ did for you on the cross. He die for your sins, He was buried and took your sins away and He rose again the third day for your justification. 1 Corinthians 15: 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 1 Corinthians 15: 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: If you believe and trust in that then you become a new creature and now you can be a good person. 2 Corinthians 5: 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

If your a good person it usually believe in god, believing is pretty important, but if you don't and your a good person, then if god does exist I'm sure he wouldn't mind in the after life

Being a good person is far more important! Religion has nothing to do with how good you are.
The question should really be:
What is more important- Believing in a made up figure or being a good person.
Makes answering a little easier heh?

“I have come to the conclusion that whether or not a person is a religious believer does not matter. Far more important is that they be a good human being”
- The Dalai Lama -
“We live very close together. So, our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them”
- The Dalai Lama -
Believing in god cannot save you from yourself. Only you can do that...

If you believe in God you are probably a good person. If you're a good person you may believe in God. They often go hand-in-hand. I don't think one is more important than the other.

The answer is bleeding obvious: being a good person.
It's plain to see that believing in God certainly is not associated with being a good person... christian_dude69 and Soldier of God are perfect examples of this.
Religious belief is just that... it's belief. It has nothing to do with being a good person. What you believe and what you do... two different things.

I think being a good person. What would be the point of believing in God if you aren't a good person? It's not like you'd be listening to Him anyway.

Believing in god requires more effort then just believing in him. James 2:26 says: "Faith without works is dead." I believe that "Believing" in God requires whole soul devotion, and if thats is your meaning of "believing" in god then being a good person will come along if bible principles are put first after all, 2 Timothy 3:16,17 states:"All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.......I truly believe that if you believe in God and put in first priority the principles in the bible, you will deffinately be a better person, but just believing in god does nothing.
Hope thats ok :)
