Eat healthy, exercise, and keep to an appropriate weight for your height/body type. Regular exercise will really help. If your parents or grandparents were/are diabetic, you may have a higher chance of getting it when you get older, so in that case it's even more important to watch all of those things.

Type 2 is definitely hereditary and also linked to your eating habits, weight, amount or lack of exercise etc. The best way to avoid this disease is to eat right, according to the food pyramid, exercise on a regular basis, and maintain an ideal weight for your height, age and body structure. Sometimes, no matter what, you may end up with it anyhow but taking steps to prevent it while you are young is the best thing. My Grandmother was insulin dependent, as am I, but my Mom takes only pills.. so there is some proof to the hereditary theory that it skips generations as far as the insulin dependence. My Mom is heavier and shorter than I am. So just take care of yourself by eating the proper foods, do some research on the subject www.diabetes.org and arm yourself with knowledge on top of everything else you want to do to protect yourself.

The biggest causes of Type 2 are obesity and heredity. For heredity there is not a whole lot you can do other than to keep sweets to a minimum, and exercise. My dad is not over weight at all and he still struggles with his blood sugars. (His dad was Type II). People that are obese have a higher chance of developing Type II. Trying to get to and maintaining a healthy weight for your height and body type will help.

Mainly by keeping your weight down and eating right. People who are overweight tend to develop type 2 diabetes more than a person who is not overweight. If it runs in your family, you can develop it also....not guaranteed to get it but it could happen.
