Cardinal;s eat sunflower seeds and they are not migratory birds but if it is not injured and you try to cage it there is a good chance it will die . But if you like tame wild birds I will tell you what i did and had lots of birds that flew to me everytime i went outside . I placed a bird feeder right outside a window that raises up and down after you get lots of birds feeding on it all the time .Take a stick and put it inside the sleeve of a shirt and fil;l it out with cotton or rags on the end of it put a glove ,so it looks like an arm sticking out the window right next to the feeder placing bird feed on the glove until u get birds eating off the glove alot .while your setting in the window .I even changed the shirt on mine every few days to get them used to it being differant .Then put your arm out with a glove on they will eat off your gloved hand then open the window a little with it out soon they will get used to you and they will eat without a glove .You can get them so tame that after they know you you will have to swat them off when ever you go outside and you will get several differant kinds that will fly to you .Its really pretty kewl and people freak out when all these birds fly to you .

Is it a baby - does it have yellow around the corners of it's beak and is it injured? If it is a baby and it is not injured, please put it back where you found it as the parents will take care of it and are probably searching frantically for it. If there is danger of a cat or some other predator, and it is injured, you must call a wildlife rehabilitation center and take it there immediately. Do not try to keep or treat the bird. It will die. I am sure of this. I have rehabilitated 5 wild birds successfully but have had many more that have died (all my friends and neighbors know me as "that bird lady" and bring me all the sick and injured finds). And I have all the right food and know what I am doing and they died anyhow. And not only will it die, but you could get in trouble as it is against the law throughout the United States to keep any wild native bird, even if it is injured and you are just trying to help.

If you have it, I'm assuming there must be something wrong with it. If there is, you need to treat it before you worry about feeding it. If you have it because you got it away from a cat or dog, you shouldn't feed it until you figure out if it has internal injuries. You can give it Gatorade or Pedialyte.

If you feed a bird or anything that has internal injuries, you could be killing it. Does it have blood in its stool.

Please give us more information.

highly illegal, esp since they are probably migratory. There are a lot of species of "red birds" as for treating it- illegal as well- take it to a rehab center. There are huge fines for having a wild native bird in your possesion. One of the only species of wild birds that you can have as a pet is a Starling because they are an invasive exotic.

i wouldn't worry about what they eat, i would be worrying if it is the state bird that you live in, cause if it is, you're in deep DO-DO. the state bird of any state is highly illegal

It's not legal to keep migratory birds without permits.

Let it go.

If it is injured, take it to a wildlife rehabber.
