The cheaper they are the longer they last. This is because cheaper franks have more chemicals and artifical ingredients than the more expensive type. Also the red dye that they use in the meat eventually fades out as the product goes bad. So if the hot dog begins to turn grey, that means that the chemicals are no longer effective. But as long as they remain pink, they are OK to eat.
