This has worked in the past for folks with tendonitis, repetitive stress syndrome, and similar maladies:
(1) Ice, as mentioned above... only do the old fashioned hydrotherapy type of icing... freeze water in a styrofoam cup and peel down the sides. You might want to have someone else do the icing since it might be awkward for you. Do small circles continuously in the area of the tendonitis for 7 minutes. Apply a warm, moist cloth and warm the area for another 7 minutes. If you still feel pain, do another 7 minutes of continuous icing movement. (The continuous movement prevents "freezer burn" from occurring... something that someone mentioned above as a danger). After the icing, gently massage the area with an oil (like Virgin Coconut Oil for example). The reddened skin will indicate that there is good circulation going on... circulation=healing. Do this as often as you need to.
Avoid the drugs if possible.
Rest your wrists. Stretching and massage are effective in the wrist area as they are on other areas of the body. Be gentle.
Three essential oil blends that I know about are particularly effective: Panaway, Valor, and Relieve It!
For deep penetration of the healing effects of the oils, first apply Panaway (a couple of drops gently feathered into the area of discomfort) and three minutes later apply a 'layer' of Valor (3-4 drops). Peppermint oil is also effective. Warning: Don't use essential oils that contain chemical solvents. If you want to purchase any of the above blends, come to http://tinyurl.com/ykxyuk Peppermint and Panaway are in
a kit called "The Essential Seven" that is very much like an
essential oil first aid kit.

If it's a new problem you can try ice on 20 min. then off for a while. Only 20 min at a time to not freeze tissue. Use of antinflamitory drugs like Advil or Alieve if tolerated can help. There isn't a real cure. You can not use it as mush as possible and do light exercises when it feels better. Mostly Range of motion exercises, stretching, then apply the ice. Time helps and you can buy wrist bands at pharmacy to make the wrist stiff and strong to keep movement from making it worse. I'd try this on my own and then if not any better in 2-3 wks. See your Dr. A sprain can take 6 wks. to heal under the best of circumstances. Good luck.

Yes, I do because I have Dequervain's Tendinitis in both of my wrists. It is on the thumb side and throbs. I have to be careful and not over use them. I sleep in a splint for this type or tendinitis.
Tendinitis treatment consists of:
Ice the affected area 20 minutes at a time every several hours for at least the first 24-48 hours. Wrap ice in a towel to protect your skin. Change to heat treatments for the next several days.
Elevate and immobilize the affected extremity.
Use a splint to keep the injured area from moving.
Take an anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen or alleve.
Try to not overuse your hands and be careful with repetitive motions.
See your doctor if you don't get better in a few days.

I have tendinitis: De Quervain since beginning of this year
I was on anti inflammatory and also have physiotherapy. Yet I still have pain.
The best advice that I've got is:
Not to overuse my hands and be careful with repetitive motions: which is true because I can feel more pain whenever I have to use the mouse for a long time or to cut etc....

wear a hard wrist splint (you can buy one a walgreens) for a few days to let it rest. If this doesn't help, you may need to see a doctor- they can give you medication and sometimes they will inject it with cortisone.
