If you are asking about a budgie, cockatiel or any birds like that then it will be a cage suitable for the type of species. But if it is hens, chickens, or any species like that then I would say build a pen and make sure there is a roof on them or they will escape.

Caged birds need to be near somewhere where they can here a radio because they can whistle.

But outdoor birds, the ones that need to be a chock pen Outside out the back is best suitable for outdoor birds with a lid on it.

You keep birds in a cage away from drafts and in the room with the most activity so the bird will be active. Cover the cage at night with a cloth so the bird will know when to go to sleep.

Depending on what species but the best place is an aviary. Cages are not really the best place to keep any bird all the time. It doesn't give them enough space and they can end up damaging their tail and primary feathers. Although many falconry birds that are regularly flown are kept tethered. But you can only do this with raptors.

You keep birds in bird cages. When you get one you should have one that is big enough for the bir to move around and even have some things for it to play with or chew on in the cage. If you clip it's wings you can also let it run around your house if you watch it closely.

keep your birds away from drafty areas. and at night if they are in an active area you should place them in a quit area. but it seem that birds like areas where there is some noises and also quiet ones and they like sunny spots but don't place them in direct sunlight.

Contact your local Birders' Club if you're talking about exotic birds.
Some wild breeds need larger pens, breeds like Chinese Golden Pheasants and Peacocks.
They need a place to roost at night, away from predator incursion if it is outside. They need shelter from weather and sometimes each other (males chase females, of course). Shade is important if you're in the sunny south.

And you're not stupid...
