We have two one year old lab husky mixes. We would love to just let them play in our yard without a leash. Is there any solutions besides a shock collar?

dogs will be dogs... especially huskies who like to explore and are curious. Basically, the other answerers have it... you'd have to just get a fence...

you might be able to call your local petco/petsmart and ask if they have such obedience classes in your area.

When my (now almost 15 year old) yellow lab was younger, he would run at times. He would dig under or jump over any fence. He would escape from a collar or harness on a cable-run (I should have named him Houdini).

He ran because he was full of youthful energy and because he was restless and bored. He didn't get enough exercise or mental stimulation, because I never walked him enough.

Your huskies are almost puppies still. Take them ourside and wear them out - walk, run, throw a ball. They're going to need 30-45 minutes a day. Remember, huskies are a working breed - genetically geared to pull loads and be useful.

You can fence your yard to keep them in, and the "invisible fence" solution is something that they can learn fairly quickly. But if they are not getting enough exercise, they will continue to act out - digging up the yard, tearing up the lawn furniture, you name it.

Get them involved with agility training, or something else that will get them (and you active).

Enjoy your dogs while you can. All too soon they will be at the end of life.

Regards,

B

I dont think you can ever train a dog to always stay in your yard. They are very curious creatures that are used to human interaction. Keep your pets safe and put up a fence or keep them on a leash. I have had dogs in the past get stolen from my yard, and one that was poisoned with antifreeze. Don't take a chance with your pets life. Put up a fence they can't jump over and that no one can get in without you knowing.

1. Get them spayed and neutered. This will keep them from wanting to roam.

2. Get a fence.

3. A shock collar is not intended to use as a way to keep your dog in an unfenced area.

4. Do obedience training and have a solid "recall" or "come" command.

5. Bond with your dog so that he listens to you and wants to be with you. This means establishing yourself as the pack leader.

quote
"train a dog not to"

It is at least 10 times harder to train a dog NOT TO than it is to train a dog TO DO. They simply have a hard time understanding negative concepts. It is also 10 times harder to train two dogs instead of just one. You will want to crate one dog while you work with the other, and then switch them to work with the other. You will get nowhere with both of them loose at the same time..
It is only as you get their basic obedience under control that you will have the tools necessary to solve the problem you have. Until then you will need to keep them confined or on lead.

The best way to train your pet is to fence in your yard..or some of it just for your dogs this way they can run and play as they want. thats what we has to do for are 2 dogs. this way no one can get to them in less you want them to and they cant go anywhere they shouldnt.

I think the best thing to do would be to fence your whole yard up if you do not want to confine them to a leash.

If they are not neutered or spayed that could provoke them to run. Walk the boundaries fo your yard with them. I would be sure that I was outside with them when they are out, you can never be 100% sure. Stray or wild animal comes along and they will go after them.

Males will always run. Females stay closer to home naturally. Put up a fence, if you are worried.
