If it is a brownish color, it is a female. A Blue to purple blue color means it is male. If the brown is very dark or scaly looking with white flaky stuff around the cere (the nose) and beak, the little girl bird may have facial scaly mites. Get Scale-X or ask a bird vet for some Ivermectin which is easily added to their water and is the best treatment for these parasites.

The melanin in the male cere is present, whereas in the female it is not,
The cere is the fleshy part where the nostrils are, the beak is protein based like the feathers and has no melanin therefore it cannot colour

Do you mean his cere or his beak ?? The beak should not be discolored, but the cere should be a blueish color if it is a male. Some males have a purple/blueish color. That is normal. The females cere will be a tan color. The cere is just above the beak. Tis normal.

That means you have a little girl!

If it last for awhile or gets gross looking, you need to see the vet.

You can find an avian vet in your area at

are you talking about the snare? That is how you tell the males from the females, females colors fade to a bone color where the males are colored.
