I have 2 cats and they are left alone in the house all day while I work (8 hours). Of course you'll want to make sure there is food water and litter.

For a cat no longer than 12 hours unless you absolutely HAVE to, mine start to get bored and angry when I leave them alone too long since I go to school for half the day then work. A kitten is a different story. If possible no longer than 6 hours, but a kitten NEEDS attention and to be around someone as much as possible. They can get into all sorts of things if left alone too long. As always make sure that it has more than enough food, water and entertainment such as toys, TV and be careful w/ what you leave out, just about anything can be dangerous to a kitten.

An adult cat can certainly be alone for the length of your work or school day. I think that would be very unfortunate for a kitten as they need some company to develop into well-balanced cats.
Two cats are a good idea. That way they have some company when you are gone and you don't have to feel guilty about leaving them.

Two kittens can be alone together too and be prepared for a little mayhem to have occurred in your absence!

We have three cats and have left them alone with plenty of food and water over a weekend while we were away. Some days it seems like they don't even notice that we are here. When I only had one I would not have left her alone for nearly as long.

I leave my cats alone all day as my fiance and i work full time and have never had a problem behaviour wise, a cats behaviour depends on its upbringing. If you are concerned the cat is bored, get a playmate (another cat) for it to socialise with during the day. However if you don't want another cat, try to make playtime with your cat, i always set 15 minutes aside for each cat for playtime. The cats love it and you have bonding time as well

You know it really depends on the age of your cat and it's temperament.

My last cat age 8-14 yrs old hated to be left alone, but also hated other cats as to why we couldn't get her a buddy. I hired a pet sitter and helped somewhat, but she still missed us. We were her buddies.

Now we have two kittens, almost young cats now, age 7 and 9 months. We left them for one night and two days and they just got through it like happy clams.

We are thinking about leaving them for two nights and three days max to see how they do.

My kittens are very well trained not to destroy everything in sight, so it makes it easier, but I still remove things before we leave for two days.

For us, we would only leave them for two nights and three days, after that I would hire a pet sitter.

Two cats make a better difference leaving them as to one cat.

If your cat is used to its environment and is an indoor rather than outdoor animal. It can be left alone for an indefinite amount of time. I have gone away for entire weekends and left my cat at home with plenty of water, food, and litter. Cats are naturally independent creatures they dont need the comfort of constent attention, to be happy and healthy. Also it is nice if you are going away for say a weekend to have a automatic waterer and feeder. That way you dont have to worry about how fresh the cats water or food is.

If a cat has a litter box, a bowl of water and some dry food in a bowl, it can be left alone for two days. But it will miss you.

You can leave a cat alone all you want, but make sure he/she has food, water and some kind of TV or radio on for it. make sure it has some toys, too. cats are like humans, they get bored. Thus why they destroy things.
