depends on what you like and want to do with it..
cat- lazy, love to be pat (if you can the right kind), smells bad and is stubborn to train
dog (most dogs)- generally can break, most have attention, needs to be feed more than a cat, but somewhat costs less, needs lots of exercise (so you need a large area were it can run or you got some good walking ahead of you), and so forth
Myself i love dogs more, because they have alot more affection than cats.. but they havent ran away from me yet and got hit by a car (and they live longer)... so im depress and piss of all the time only my animals dying.. because like my dogs are smart enough to move... or not go into that area...

It depends on your living circumstances and lifestyle. A dog requires more attention and care-- dogs are very sociable and don't do well if you can't give them a lot of time and attention. Cats are more independent and are capable of entertaining themselves if they are left alone all day while you are at work. Also a cat will use a litter pan if it's kept indoors, so you don't have to let it out or walk it several times a day like you do with a dog. Cats eat less, of course.
A dog on the other hand is great company and will give you a lot of unconditional love. If you are very physically active and like to run and be outdoors, your dog can be your companion for outings and will make things more fun. Dogs have a sense of humor which is similar to a person's and a lot of dogs are capable of understanding almost everything you say to them. They're very eager to please, whereas cats are more self-sufficient.
I have dogs, a cat, and birds-- and all of them are great in their own ways. BUT I work at home so I can spend a lot of time with my pets and almost never have to leave them alone. If you have to spend a lot of time at work or school, DON'T get a puppy or kitten unless there is someone who can watch your pet for you while you are out. And of course make sure you can afford your pet's vet care food, and toys no matter what kind of pet you end up getting.
I hope this was helpful!

There are a lot of factors in which is better. The size of the residence, the amount of time you wish to spend with the pet, and the amount of interaction you expect from the pet. I'm more of a cat person since I like to have independent pets that aren't overly needy. My husband is a dog person because he likes to have something that's dependent on him and listens when it's given an order.

I love all animals, so this answer will depend on where you are planning on living and how much time you are willing to put into the animal.
A cat is a very loving companion, but you do not have to be with them all the time. You can go on short one day trips without worrying about getting them a babysitter. As long as you fill their food and water dishes and give them a nice clean liter box. They'll miss you when your away, but will be fine without you or anyone else around.
A dog is another very loving companion animal, but they need a lot more care and attention then a cat does. You need to walk them if you live in a place without a big yard for them to run around in. You also need to play with them. They'll play by themselves, but would much rather have a human companion play with them. And you can't leave them alone for extended periods of time. If you plan on going (even on a one day trip) you need to get them a pet sitter. Or find a nice place to take them to while you are away. Like your local Veterinarian clinic.
Well I hope that helps you decide what animal is right for you. The next question you should ask is what breed would work best with your personality.

It depends on the owner. I think a dog needs more training and attention than a cat. So I would say a cat is better for a busy person.

Dog: If you want a true buddy, a very needy buddy that is always around you and needing you all the time, then a Dog.
Cat: If you want a sometimes buddy, sometimes needy, but most of all, independent and not so needy, then a Cat.
It comes down to, do you want a dog that WILL love you forever, or a cat that YOU will love forever?
I'm not saying cats don't love you forever, I haven't found one that does yet like a dog, but I choose cats over dogs. Dogs are like toddlers.
It's your call.

Dogs need more attention in my opinion. I have cats because I am not home a lot. My mother-in-law is home all the time and she has dogs. I also noticed cats are more to themselves. If you're looking for a companion, get a dog.

I like them both but prefer a cat. Dogs are a little too much work for my busy life style. I do like having a pet to come home to though.

It depends. I love both. But dogs are totally devoted to you, yet more work. You have to walk them, let them out, and spend lots of money at the vet. Cats just need a litter box and dry food. They are easier to care for and very affectionate. There's an old joke: Dogs have owners, cats have staff. Cats don't need you as much as dogs do, but they will love you. Mine is on my lap now.
