Masturbation is only a sin when there is lust involved, because lust is a deadly sin.

Then we must ask, "What is lust?"

The best source for this answer would be either the Holy Bible or the Catechism of the Catholic Church which defines Lust as "an intense desire". So therefore if you only have a natural occurring sexual attraction rather than an INTENSE DESIRE TO TAKE, then it is not sinful.

Because Lust for a woman is essentially the deep intense desire to take a woman from her husband... this is not the same as a harmless sexual turn on that harms no one.

But at most if anything masturbation is only a venial sin unless you do it constantly all day long to the point that you aren't able to do anything else... then you would be committing Gluttony, but just moderate/occassional masturbation harms no one except for your vow of chastity (if one was taken that is). In other words God would (I assume) rather you masturbate (tame the beast) instead of having an intense lust on top of out of control hormones which could lead to raping someone (or consensual sex outside of marriage).

God has common sense, He was human after all and I believe would rather us occasionally fulfill our natural needs rather than force them upon an innocent person! And I can't imagine what type of person would disagree to that.

Although the bible does not use the word masturbation there are many references to sexual immorality, lust etc. which can be considered as part of the act of masturbation:

1 Cor. 6:18, "Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body."
Eph. 5:3, "But do not let immorality or any impurity or greed even be named among you, as is proper among saints."
Col. 3:5, "Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry."
1 Thess. 4:2, "For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God."

Some say this verse imparticular condemns masturbation:

"He spilled his seed on the ground... And the thing which Onan did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also" (Genesis 38:9-10).
ultimately you have to read and study the bible for yourself in the end make a decision as to what you think is right and wrong.

lol.... if masturbation is a sin punishable by hell, then heaven's gonna be a rather lonely place!

To answer your question, Christ himself had almost nothing to say about sexuality. He mentioned 'fornication' a couple of times, but this was in reference to divorce (the only reason for a man to divorce his wife, in Jesus' opinion, was if the wife was unfaithful). And of course he absolved the prostitute of guilt as well, so how evil could mere masturbation be in the eyes of Jesus?

Paul, on the other hand, railed against 'sins of the flesh' every chance he got, and even though he didn't define this term, I'm sure it included masturbation in his own mind. Paul is also the one who said it was better to be like him (meaning complete celibacy), but if you absolutely have to get some, then he supposes you can marry. (Nice of him to concede that, considering God commanded his people to be fruitful and multiply.) So consider the source: Basically Paul was a prude of the highest order. He also railed against things such as 'anger', 'foolish talking', 'reveling', and 'jesting'.... sounds like a rather reasonable person, huh?

I wish Jesus had written his own book because Paulianity is waaaaaaaaay more guilt-inducing than Christianity, and unfounded guilt breeds unsound minds.

Of course you can set the Bible aside entirely and worship Playboy instead for all I care. =)

Yes. Any selfish gratification of fleshly lusts lessens the mind's ability and desire to communicate with God or to please Him.

1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech [you] as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof].

Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

The gratification of lusts of the flesh works against the development of the beautiful Christlike character which God wants you to have.

well if your a Christian, i bet you like C.S. Lewis right? any Christians reading this, you like C.S. Lewis dont you? he's really good on Christianity

and he specifically says that 'sin of the skin is the least of all sins'

i mean monkeys do it, animals do it, and its scientifically explained why you do it. its not a sin. if anyone says it is a sin, its likely they are the kind of Christian that whenever they have a problem or there is a problem somewhere else they spend more time asking god to fix it than trying to fix it themselves

Yes. ill explain why in jsut a sec...

the deliberate use of the sexual faculty for whatever reason, outside of marraige is essentially contrary to its purpose. Always.

It is a sin. Always. Lust is a sin in of itself. But masterbation is a sin in of itself also, and ussually promotes, or is promoted by the sin of lust.

If you are struggling sexually and are not married,I think it best to take care of that drive, rather then sleeping around.God made us to have that desire. But you want Gods best for you, maybe do some prayer, and ask God yourself. It can sometimes get out of control, but if you have relationship with God ask him.He will let you know if its out of control.Don't condemn yourself you're healthy.Maybe its time you pray for your mate to hurry along,if you are not already married. If you are married then this is another issue and question.Be loved and blessed

No one on Y!A knows the answer to everything Christian or Godly. Neither do they know what every sin is or isn't.

And even if they did, I suspect you will choose to disbelieve them, because clearly your question is primarily for titillation - it's a cheap shot.

Perhaps if it keeps you from giving pleasure to your spouse. For those who are married, God intends that you enjoy sexual pleasure with your spouse. For those who are celibate, it can be a way to release sexual tension without fornicating / or engaging in risky behavior. Is it a sin... I really do not know for sure?
