Fasting is one of the three methods of interior penance along with prayer and almsgiving.

Many Catholics voluntarily give up meat on every Friday not only during Lent.

With love in Christ.

Friday represents Good Friday and Wednesday represents the day that Jesus was betrayed by Judas. Fasting from meat on Fridays is a practice that started many years after the Church was originally formed. The idea is to fast from foods containing blood.

Once upon a time Catholics were not even supposed to eat fish on Fridays, but it put a damper on the fishing industry and they pressured the Pope to allow fish on Fridays. Amazing how the all mighty buck tends to sway certain practices and beliefs.

Jesus Christ died for all mankind and it is not important to live by rules and regulations mandated by men for religious control.

My family does that.
Catholics are supposed to offer up something every friday (besides during lent). Meat is kind of the standard, but you can give up other things. Its just in respect for Jesus' death on Good Friday. During Lent abstaining from meat on fridays is required.

It's the same reason as in Lent, it is a common Church abstinence. (Meaning required). Although, there are options available other than going meatless during the normal year. I must admit though, that most Catholics do not seem to realize this and think that it was dropped with Vatican II.

There is nothing in the bible about not eating meat on Friday. It is just one more of the Catholic churches traditions that gets modified every once in a while.

Some Catholics offer an abstinence one time a week for the honor and glory of what Jesus sacrifice for each of us. It is their way of saying thank you, and to discipline their wants against their needs. Faith over human desire.

Different Catholics fast and abstain with in many ways. It is a private form of prayer.

some people stick to the old tradition of abstaining from meat on every friday, it's done out of respect and sacrifice for the Lord and all He did for us. fridays were choosen in rememberance of the day Christ died. now, abstaining from meat doesn't mean crab legs and lobster tail ; )

Some people still do it, but it hasn't been a requirement since Vatican II wussed up the religion.

As an extra act of abstinence...to remind us that Jesus died on Good Friday.

That was always the rule....and I see no reason to change it.
