I think the significance was that even though there were so many bad things going on there were still things in life that beautiful. Like being able to shield and protect his son from the horrors around them. Or the hope of being able to one day see his wife again. There was also the fact that at the beginning fo the story the woman he was in love with was taken and was also way out of his league, however, he never stopped pursuing her and they made a beautiful life. No matter how much bad is around us there is plenty of beauty around too. Life is what you make of it and thank god we'll never have to go through the situation that was portrayed in the movie.
