when asleep, a person loses consciousness either completely or partially. the total loss of consciousness may be the reason why people relate sleep to death, or some people refer to sleep as a 'daily death'.

Think about it this way, Are you ever aware or know when you are dreaming. And if you had a dream so vivid that you weren't sure you were awake or asleep. If you became aware during a dream, how could you be sure you weren't already dead and that you weren't experiencing an afterlife?

When we sleep we lie down and loose consciousness, if we were to die in our sleep externally it might not be immediately clear that we had died.

People can train themselves to be lucid dreamers where they become aware of their dream states, this is done for many reasons, for instance to train people with post traumatic stress and chronic nightmares to have less traumatic nightmares or wake themselves up if they start having a bad dream.

There are many movies that touch on this theme, Brainstorm, The Matrix, Vanilla Sky, Solaris and even the new movie the Fountain touch on these themes.

You're not connected to the world mentally or spiritually when you're unconcious, such as in death.
