First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.
First, treat the cat with Capstar. This is a pill that will kill all of the fleas that get on the cat for the first 24 hours. Second, use either frontline or advantage. I usually tell people to switch back and forth between the two because there are two different types of fleas that are common on cats and frontline works better on the one type and advantage works better on the other.
Once the cat has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it.) Outside I would use Demon with Gentrol or Nylar. Treating your house is just as important as treating the cat!
It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

Frontline Top Spot works really well, but you'll also have to do a lot of other stuff:
1) bathe your cats, with a good cat shampoo or Dawn dishwashing liquid. Rinse many times to get it all out and avoid the eyes. I run a luke warm bath ahead of time and put a lot of soft towels in the bathroom before i even bring one of them up there.
2) Get a flea comb or combs and comb for fleas, flea eggs and flea dirt several times a day. I place a sticky lint roller right next to me and the kitty I'm working on, so if I catch a flea, I can stick him to the roller quickly. Then I cut his head off immediately and place all the used roller pages in a ziplock bag, before it goes into the trash.
3) vacuum every room every day, and throw the vacuum bag out immediately, sealing it into a ziplock bag.
4) If the fleas have really settled in, you'll need to flea bomb your house. We have a 2 story plus basement home, with 4 bedrooms. So we set off 6 bombs at a time. You need to follow all directions very carefully, concerning evacuating all animals and humans the house, putting away edibles, turning off all pilot lights and automatically switched products. A second bombing is necessary 2 weeks after that and you might even need a third one.
5) Thick stubborn carpets may need to be sent out to be cleaned (throw rugs and orientals) and you can de-flea other rugs in the house by mixing Borax and table salt 1:1 and brooming it into the rug. Let it sit like that for 3-7 days, then vacuum it up very well and throw the bags out (in ziploc etc.) If you have a carpeted "cat tree" or "cat condo" steam clean it and do all the vacuuming on it with the rest of the house. Keep your cats out of the room with the borax/salt.
6) Finally you can order Frontline spray. You have to be extremely careful with this, as it is toxic. I just sprayed some into a cloth and lightly rubbed a bit around on the carpet that had been cleaned (not too much!)
7) If all of this is too much, you might have to board your kitties at a "cat hotel" until the house has been properly de-flead. Of course they must be flea free at the time.
It's a horrible hassle, but you'll be glad you did it and got your life back again. Fleas can take over your whole life and are very bad for your cats.

I have had good luck with "Hartz Flea and Tick Conditioning Shampoo for Cats". It took two or three baths, one day apart but it got rid of all the fleas on a totally flea infested kitten and caused no problems for the cat. We also had no problmes with fleas spreading to the our dog or any of our family at the time. It seem to kill eggs too, as the kitten never developed fleas after that.

If your cats have a lot of fleas on them, they are acting as hosts, and you need to have them flea-dipped by a professional groomer. While that's happening, remove any other animals and small children from the house and FOG the house (one fogger per room) with a commercial flea fogger that is CAT SAFE (Petsmart and Petco carry good brands, but you need to be sure that the one you get is CAT SAFE--some flea products are meant for homes that have just dogs, and they can cause serious neurological damage to cats).

I do not like chemicals so I used different natural stuff to no avail. So I just used a flea comb and kept coming my cat until I got rid of them all. I would keep wiping the comb off with a damp paper towel to get the eggs and uh, poop (turns red when wet).
I know this sounds sick, but I turned it into kind of a challenge. When the nasty little blood sucking buggers would get stuck in the comb I would squish them with my nail and they would make a cool popping noise. Eventually there were no more left and I kinda missed gett'n them little buggers.

The vet that we see has Frontline I think. $15 for a monthly treatment. Also something else that I have found that works... I have 2 cats, I comb them with a flea comb and dip the comb (with fleas on it) in a bowl of hot water with Dawn dish detergent. It kills them right away.

Zodiac is awesome - it takes time, though, 'cause if I'm not mistaken, it attacks their life cycle. It takes a couple generations to work at its maximum effectiveness. You might try cleaning really, really good too. I mean vacuume EVERYTHING and throw out all the extra stuff you've got laying around. Wash all the fabric stuff you can. It helps.
