We use Home Again microchips. I have heard over the years that the Avid chips migrate. The Home Again chips seem to work just fine.

Well in a perfect world that's how it would work. However, technology has not caught up with you. You are thinking of a radio collar that we use in wildlife research. They are big and clunky and not injectable. A microchip is implanted under the skin. The trick that someone has to find the dog and take it into a shelter or vet and the workers have to scan the dog (most don't unless asked) then the reader has to be from the same company as the chip. The reader will give them a number and the worker needs to call the company or get on line and look up that number with the company and that will give them your info and they should call you. This is all so complicated and hardly ever works. However, a couple of bucks to have a slightly better chance at finding your wonderful pup is worth it.

It's not that the microchips don't work, it's just that with some of the chips out there, a shelter may need a few different scanners in order to find a chip in an animal. This is not what usually happens and if they scan the animal once and it doesn't show anything, they usually will not scan with another scanner, or they may not have the other type.
AVID chips have different choices for their chips and you may want to check them out to decide on the best choice for them. This may be more confusing then it's worth. Most of their chips are encoded and can only be read by their own scanner. Home Again can use the regular universal scanner. We use 24PetWatch chips and they can also use the universal scanner. Banfield, if allowed to start selling their chip again works on an entirely different frequency and requires another scanner.
So my answer to you would be if you were going to get it done, but go with 24Petwatch chips or Home Again chips.
There is no one universal scanner that will detect them all due to all the in fighting amongst the chip dealers out there, but we soon hope there will be. The technology is out there for it, now if they, the chip company's will only keep the animal's well being in mind, we will have it in our hands soon.
You may want to look into ear tattooing. Also the old fashion collar and tag method. Although, we know that they can break off of an animal.

Most shelters now have the universal scanner but HomeAgain is the best chip. I have all my dogs chipped with them and they are parent companied by AKC.
No the chips don't always work; and sometimes if they migrate after an initial scan the shelters think there are no chips; my one boy had to be body scanned several times to pick up his chip. The shelters will scan your pet for you to make sure the chip is working.

Home Again chips are the most popular. Most shelters use the home again systems but still have access to avid scanners as well. they are definately worth it. it's the best way to prove ownership of your dog also in case its lost or stolen.

There was one brand that did not work but I don't remember which. My dogs all have chips from 24Hour Petwatch, they've been around for a long time. Animal control will scan them for you to check if you wonder if it is working.

yes there are many brands of microchips but, most shelters have universal readers so as long as you actually register with the microchip company there should be no problem returning your pet

The scanners made two biggest companies, Avid & Home Again, can both pick up the presence of a microchip, even if it is not one of theirs.

It doesn't matter. When/if NAIS passes and becomes law, they will ALL be obsolete, they only chips that will comply with this law will be made by Digital Angel.
THEN we will all be in a national database and have to report to the government when we take our dogs somewhere.
"1984", here we come!
No chips in MY dogs!!!
