I may be flying from the West Coast USA to Australia soon. Can anyone tell me if there is a "busy" or "tourist" season for travel to Perth? I'm trying to figure out if there is a better time to go in order to keep plane ticket prices low.

And do you have suggestions for airlines?

Thanks.

If you fly in January the airfares will be more expensive than February - an example with Qantas would be January fares from $1800 to $2400 depending on the day but February can be as low as $1200 to $1500 for 1 month stay from LA to Sydney. If you booked your fare through to Perth you could expect to add another $400 - $500 to these prices. You could reduce the Sydney to Perth leg by around $150 AUD with VirginBlue but you would have to make sure you can connect flights. March, April and May are around $1600.

On the International leg of the journey you will probably find most airlines are around the same price but the domestic leg from Sydney to Perth can be quite varied so looking at the Qantas, VirginBlue and Jetstar sites would be a good idea. Also check with a travel agent in the US to see if they are offering any good deals.

In terms of airlines, the choices are Qantas, United and Air New Zealand (which would require a connection through Auckland). Qantas generally has the best service and the prices are all about the same. Try picking up the New York Times Sunday travel section, there are sometimes really good deals there.

From the east coast of Au to Perth, Jetstar tends to have the best fares, although it is worth checking on the web sites for Virgin Blue and Qantas as well. If you are willing to fly at an odd time, the fares can be much cheaper.

Good luck!

The tourist season in Australia is the spring/ summer. Remember that right now , in the USA, we are going into winter, so Australia is going into summer. Best fares depend on when you want to go and how far in advance you book your tickets. As of right now, the best standard fare is on Air New Zealand.
