I look after other people dogs a lot.
Often when you tell a dog off for misbehaving they are initially shocked and may be aloof for awhile.
But after a certain time they act as if the incident did not happen.

So do dogs have a short memory (not like cats) and forget that they were punished , or do they actually forgive their carers and accept them as merely human?

As much as I love my dog and think he's human at times, dogs are far from our level of intelligence. Dogs simply forget that the incident happened and they move on to something else. You can train them not to exhibit certain behaviors by reinforcing the preferred behavior or discouraging the bad behavior, but if you do not catch them in the act, they have no idea why you are rewarding or punishing them. Dogs "love" us because we feed them and provide a pretty sweet life for them.

trust me dogs have a very long memory & are very forgiving as they love people but if someone is a cruel creep the dog will end up hating that person in the end & will bite
always be kind to animals because they are beautiful creatures & will be your friend

dogs do remember its not just training!!!
if my dog wanted a walk she would run to where her lead was & nudge it etc
each Xmas or birthday as soon as i would wrap up a present she would search all around sniffing & looking for her present because she could always remember from one occasion to the next that i always had a gift of doggie treats for her & that is no bull !!

From personal experience I believe the answer is both. They love us so much they forgive us for almost anything but after a couple hours they forget what they did anyway.

dogs generally live in the "now"- they don't hold grudges.
read the dog whisperer book or watch his show- he's really insightful about their behavior

There everything you want them to be if you treat them right.
