it is the spread of the tectonic plates across the seafloor as the earth's crust manages to shift and contract , causing the movement of the earth's plates . the magma rises through as the rock breaks with the shifts , cooling and creating new rock formations as the liquid rock cools down into solid form and the larger plates move forwards, some as slow as inches over years or less. this slow process is the movement of the whole world, and not just the seafloor, though if you could, it would be quite a bit more spectacular, seeing the rivers of magma move across whole oceans .
