Ok I'll be completely honest with most of you I'd like to move there. At the Beach at the moment, which is ok, but for what I'm paying out here I think I could do better (1,300). Then again maybe I'm a bit niave about that. Anyway, we're thinking about watching the ball drop in Times Square, but we're unsure if we should take the train from here or just drive up there, where to park if we do drive, and how to hold onto our money, which wasn't a problem the last time, even given the fact that I fell asleep on the train (which wasn't that smart of a thing to do), but that's neither here or there. So, aside from getting up there, how much should I be prepared to shell out for that day or so ...

As far as rent in NYC, there are a wide range of options. Manhattan is not the only burrough in NYC. The most affordable housing is within the other four burroughs- Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Staten Island is the least convenient, transportation-wise. You can get a 1000 sq ft apartment in a nice neighborhood in any of the other burroughs that is 30-45 minute train ride away for about $1000 a month.

Depending on where the "Beach" is, its a pretty good idea across the board to take the train and eliminate the frustrations with having a car in the city.

To hold onto your money, you should keep it in a close bag or in your front pocket. Just don't be waving your money around and you won't lose it.

If you want to spend the night in the city, you better make your reservation now. It should cost $200-$600, depending on the hotel and location. Besides hotel costs, your drinks will cost $5-$10 each, food $2-$200. A one day subway metro card is $7.

plan on bringing a lot of money if you plan to drive
parking garages charge a bundle if you can find one with a vacancy this time of year
you'll never park on the street unless you leave the car in one of the outer boroughs or new jersey that is why most people in manhattan do not own a car
take the train
good luck trying to find a place to stay in the city unless it is a park bench or homeless shelter gives new meaning to NO ROOM AT THE INN- unless you have already booked or want to pay through the nose IF you find a place
be prepared to stand for hours and hours without being able to leave your spot or you can't return there including for a trip to the bathroom-(non exsistent)

checked and quadruple checked by police officers
not being allowed to carry any bags or backpacks
corralled in holding pens like cattle at specific spots by the police
run the risk of thousands of pickpockets having a field day
standing so far away you would have been better off watching from a warm place on TV
not to mention if the weather is bad
there are plenty of other places to enjoy new years eve in new york if you really have to come
but times square is not what you think it is
BTW
1300 will not buy you a closet in NY if you can get it for that unless you want to live in a depressed area of one of the other boroughs
and hundreds of people fall asleep on the train every day to and from work and never get robbed
if you look and act like a tourist put a bullseye on you that night
