Hello - I was attempting to format my computer - running xp - when I came across an fdisk window - I wasnt concentrating and did something serious - Now I am unable to format (the machine says unrecognised media in drive C) . So .. I made a boot disk but get this message:

Disk I/O error
replace the disk, and then press any key

I dont know if its a zero or a capital O in the error message ..

Can anyone translate that error message and perhaps tell me how to fix it please?

Thankyou

Samantha

Okay. Don't panic, but you may have deleted your Windows software. If this is what you were trying to do Congrats, if not lets help you put this thing back together.

Your boot disk isn't working. There are a number of reasons this may be so let me walk you through them.

First your bios might not be setup to boot from the floppy (or the cd-rom) This is how you fix this. Reboot your computer. As it starts up hit the delete key. This should get you into the bios setup screen. You need to set the computer to boot from: floppy then CD-rom then hard drive.
All bios'es are a little different so your configuration will vary but look for "Boot" and "Boot Device Priority"

Second your boot disk might not be good. You should use the install disk of the operating system you want. (Probably Windows XP) After you've done the first step (above) you should be able to boot from a CD-rom. So place the install disk into the CD-rom drive and reboot the computer. After it checks memory and does the "bios stuff" your CD-rom light will blink and the screen will say "press any key to boot from CD..." When that happens put your hand on the keyboard and press down, or just hit a key. The rest should be a matter of following on-screen directions. If you need more help yim me.

Samantha,
First its a Zero, and it is becasue when you FDISK your PC, it deletes the partition, so how to fix it,
1. run fdisk again, this time take your time, choose to make a partition, make it as large as it will let you.
2, Run this command C:\\Format C: /U
that will prep the disk so that when you go to install XP it will see the disk and can fix it, but with no partition it doesnt recognize it as a drive.if it erros on the format just drop the /U. All that does is tell the system to unconditionally format the drive back to factory spec.

1. Boot to your operating system’s Startup diskette.
2. At the A: prompt, type “FDISK /MBR,” then press ENTER.
3. This should rebuild your partition table if possible. After doing this, eject the diskette and reboot. You should be able to reboot into Windows and access your data.
