In the 'Open' dialogue box, under Files of Type, choose 'Recover Text From Any File' and you should be able to read any text part of the document. Any formatting or graphics created in the later version will be lost.

Open the 2007 file. Do a "Save as" and in the "Save as type" field, scroll down and choose something like Word 97-2002 format.

You might want to give a new name so it doesn't overwrite the original file.

If you don't have 2007 Word, I guess you could send the file to your buddy and ask him/her to convert it for you.

There is no converter needed. Just open the file saved by MSWord 2007 by double clicking it when you are using MSWord 2002.
