I see all the answers given and there isn't one good one. People with bipolar are not all psychos, they are people living day to day the best they can. They have jobs families and lives like everyone else. There are a few that may cause problems because they refuse to take their meds but I don't see them everyday ruining the lives around them anymore than I see normal people walking down the street.
What happened to compassion for your fellow man. People don't ask to be bipolar. Have you ever heard someone ***** about a cancer patient going through treatment? No. Bipolar is a disease like any other and the people that have it deserve the kindness that anyone else does.
So to answer your question. People are *******!

Because most people can't deal with what they think is outside their realm of "normal," or things they don't know about. A lot of times to, I have people ask me about why I even bother to tell people, like they want to know am I telling everyone that's what I have so I can get attention. Also, there are a lot of people that I have come in contact with that are actually scared of me, because they don't understand what it means to be bi-polar, and so they think I am psychotic and will go on a killing spree or something along those lines. Basically, I've found that it just plain ignorance to tell you the truth, and it's that way with any kind of discrimination. Hope this helps you some.

1. People fear what they don't understand.
2. People with BP disorder that are not currently stable tend to exhibit erratic, exagerated and extreme behaviors that can be dangerous and frightening.
3. Even if someone is familiar with BP disorder they may be unwilling to expose themselves to any sort of relationship with someone that has BP disorder because of difficult past experiences. An unstable patient can be very difficult if not dangerous to be around.
4. Some people are not willing to make the effort to help other people during difficult circumstances.

It has nothing to do with not understanding. It's just irritating that someone would have to be annoyed and put up with someone's attitude or other acts, just because they have "bipolar" disorder. The person having to deal with this stuff didn't do anything wrong, and doesn't deserve to have to deal with it.

People are judgemental pro and con toward most people. We like to judge. For 'bipolar,' aka manic depressive, many people view them as irrational and unpredictable, so they distance themselves from them whenever possible.

People are judgemental to anyone with a mental illness. They can't relate. They are afraid of the unknown.

How would people like a car that alternatively roared like a dragster and petered out like a clunker? Especially at unpredictable and inconvenient times? It can get very tiresome.

Because to people who are more stable, it's kind of annoying. People generally have trouble sympathising with something they don't understand.
