The Washington Post and the Brookings Institution say there are as many as eleven unrecovered H-bombs lost during the Cold War.

There's a difference between lost in the cold war and
lying around the county. AFAIK there're no H-bombs
missing on us soil. I'm not sure what bombtype was
lost in canada. Might have been H-bombs. But there're
a few A-bombs lying around. Most on ground locations are
known though.

Most of these 'lost' weapons are lying at the bottom of the ocean. And many of these did not have the plutonium cores installed (the plutonium cores were stored separately as a safety precaution).

The only one known to be missing on land shattered on impact and the remains of the core are located about 100 feet below ground level in a bog. It has not been recovered due to technological and expense issues in digging a hole that deep in unstable soil. (The area is monitored and it is illegal to dig on the site.)
