You can use Dawn dishsoap...it will kill fleas. HOWEVER...after bathing the dog with the Dawn, bathe again with a good quality dog shampoo. I would not use Dawn as a sole shampoo.
Most human shampoos are not all that different from dog shampoos(ph wise) believe it or not. I know people who show dogs and they swear by Pantene.
I personally like to use high quality dog shampoos.

Don't use dish soap or human shampoo!!! Both are harsh to the skin of pets and really strips away the essential oils in their coat. The best solution - go to the pet store and pick up a pet shampoo with aloe and oatmeal. If you can, get your dog all soapy and let it stay on the skin for about 5 - 10 minutes. This is something I do to help with moisturizing the skin and also allowing the smell of the shampoo be a little stronger and longer lasting. I have bathed many dogs in 6 years in a vet hospital and this is the best thing I have found!

Depends on the dog and the soap. Just like us
they can have reactions to things in soaps.
Best just to hose the dog down or let him swim
in the tub.
If you need to use soap, I agree that baby shampoo is probably the mildest.
Some dogs get dried out from excessive bathing...
a little conditioner will remedy that,...but again
there can be allergies.
Best to stick with just a water rinse unless you
have to kill an odor.

Dish soap or even our soap is not suitable for dogs. Their soaps and shampoos are specially balanced to suit their skin and coat. Though its tempting to use any soap on the dog dont try it. Once they get skin problems or itches because of it then the vet visit and cure is gonna cost you a lot more than their shampoo.

I would not want to recomend it. It may mess the dogs pH balance and cause more problems in the long run. Dog shampoo is pretty cheep and you can get it in a variety of different smells. If you do decide to use dish soap then use Dawn (or whatever the kind is that they use on the birds that get trapped in oil spills).

Dawn was used to get TAR and OIL off sea mammals and birds when there were oil spills -- gives you an idea how harsh this stuff is. It strips the natural oil off the dog's hair and dries his skin -- it is a DETERGENT - not to be used as a shampoo. As to the clueless wonders who claim it's great and it kills fleas, it may kill a few adult fleas, any washing of an animal does, but it does nothing to kill eggs and larvae - they hatch and the dog is infested again. So - NO, wait until you can get some mild shampoo made specificall for dogs. As to flea prevention, only thing that works are regular, name brand monthly flea/tick preventatives. I use Advantix on all my dogs, we live in the rural south, and they never have fleas or ticks. Please don't give advice based on ignorance, old wives tales, urban myths, etc. You greatly harm dogs by recommended harsh detergents - and they certainly don't work as flea control.

According to my local PAWS that is a good way to get rid of fleas. For a simple cleaning bath, I use kiddie "tear free" shampoo. My dogs look and smell great!
