I agree with kasisp19. She may have a chip for identification. In that case, you will be able to return her to her owner. If not, you may want to take her to the local SPCA because sometimes owners look there for lost pups there. Most likely the SPCA will also check for the chip.
I found a wandering basset hound once and took her to the local SPCA. They told me to check back in a few days to see if anyone came to claim her. If not, I could have her. When we called after a few days, her owner had picked her up.
Basset Hounds are hunting dogs and have a strong desire to follow their noses and then they get lost. That's why it's important to make sure that you never leave a basset outside unattended. It should either be on a leash or in a fenced yard. Otherwise, it may wander off and get lost.
Your basset hound may have an upset owner who's out looking for her. That's why I think it's important to try to locate the owner before deciding to keep her for yourself. If my basset hound was lost, I would definitely want him back. If you can not locate the owner, then by all means take care of her. They are great dogs.
Good luck!

First of all if you found a basset wandering she is just that a wanderer. So dont get attached unless you plan on keeping her indoors. They are hounds so they love to explore. They are escape artist. You might want to put an add in the paper for lost dog or some signs out. Good luck! We had a female basset and her name was Daisy

I rescued a basset hound a couple years back. Do exactly what apirateforgod said! She's exactly right.
My dog's name is Boodie, and he's fantastic. (and extremely stubborn so prepare yourself)
Good luck with your new friend!
ps Although Lynda M is right about the drooling thing, it's not true for all bassets. Boodie hardly EVER drools. But to make up for it, he's quite the shedder.

You should probably take her into your house, give her a nice bath, dry food, and a comfy place to sleep! I would definitely take her to the vet tomorrow to check for heartworms and that kind of thing. My best friend has a hound that she found wondering around some land, and it is a huge coincidence that you have found one as well! I hope you satisfied with this cute little dog! I like the names Remy and Layla. Good luck, m'dear!

Depends on how old- feed puppy food (dry) according to her weight - adult dog food if she looks to be about one year old. YOu should have a vet check her asap to make sure she doesn't have any intestinal parasites, heartworms, etc. and get her vaccinated. Also- basset hounds are prone to back problems because they are so long. Don't let her get overweight, and don't let her jump on and off too many things. Good luck with your new pal.

First, you need to take her to a vet for a "once over" and to see if she needs meds, shots, etc. Be warned~ Bassets drool A LOT so they're not for everyone. Our basset's registered name is Mighty Thor God of Thunder but he goes by Thor.

I would probably take it to the vet first. He might also be able to scan the microchip that most animals are suppose to get now adays, and see if it might belong to someone else. If there's no chip I would get it caught up on all shots and start the dog on interceptor and front line. You want a healthy dog.
