A pit bull. Seriously, if you get one very young (8 weeks I *believe* is the youngest they should be taken from mom) it will grow up used to the pinching pulling etc of very small children... when loved and trained correctly they are great family dogs. You own't even have to train pup to guard... the stigma attached to the breed is often enough to deter the casual prowler.
The problem with Beagles and Labs, they're known as "friendly breeds". You'll have to do some training to make it a guard dog, and that could ultimately turn it against your family... with a pittie you can just love em, and the reputation alone will keep em away.

I ran into the same problem I have a 3 y/o son, and some guy stepped over my 4 y/o shih tzu sleeping on the back deck and walked into my house. Can you say "Ello big dog needed!". lol. After spending a lot of time researching and talking to people. Ok well a week, but I'm a fast reader. :) We decided on a Great Pyrenees. We got him at 8 weeks, and now at 3 months he's 4 times the size of our Shih Tzu. lol. He's great with kids, keeps people outta my yard, and a giant ball of loveable fur. More info on the breed can be found here:

or check out their Breed Selector Quiz to help narrow down the perfect dog. It can be found here:

If you are looking for a family pet that is fine but you are not going to get a "gaurd dog" for a family.
Gaurd dogs are not family pets and are not treated like a pet. They are a working dog who is handled by one person and spend hundreds of hours in training with one person. They are not social animals and do not spend time in family settings. They are not suitable to be a family pet or around children. They are working dogs and working dogs only.
If you are looking for a good family pet most dogs will protect the family and the property they live on naturally with out much training. Get something that fits into your familys lifestyle and something that you can handle grooming and exercise requiremnts for and something that you can handle the tempermant of.
I work with a lrage number of Dobermans in resuce. People wanted a gaurd dog and found out that dobermans are hard headed and take lots of exercise and training and they will test the owners and many people just do not have the time and patience to train one.

Pit bulls are very good with kids, if you get one as a young puppy who hasn't been trained to be aggressive.
