Suppose a person were to have access to a cable connection and had an HDTV. Is there a way that they could access HDTV cable channels directly from the cable? Is there an aftermarket box that this person could buy that would not have to come from a cable company?

Ok the first two answers sound like cable salespeople. The person already gets about 3 HD channels without any box at all, so I don't buy either answer. Come on people, think. How can that happen? How can they access more of the HD channels with...say...Radio Shack parts? Anyone?

Ok, I guess my point is being lost. Let's try a new approach. Is it possible for an HDTV to pick up HD channels from just a basic cable conection? I know of an HDTV that, when a channel 89 is selected for example, it scans and displays channel "89-1" and it is in widescreen and extremely clear. When a commercial comes on, it goes back to normal format. Explain.

You need a high definition cable box from the cable provider.

You don't just need the cable connection, you also need an HD connection (HDMI or component cables) and an HD Digital Receiver.

Cable companies offer the cheapest way to enjoy HDTV. They give you the box, the required cables (you can always upgrade them yourself like with a Monster Cable), and charge for the service at about $3.00 to $5.00 extra a month on most services. The only thing you really end paying for yourself is the cost of installation (keep your eye out for special promotions from your cable company - like free installation).

Sorry, but the only way to get cable programming is from the cable company. If such boxes were available, you would have to get them from "underground" sources since they would be illegal. Premium cable channels such as HBO, cannot be received from an antenna.
